These past 2 weeks have been full of beautiful weather and rain. We’ve enjoyed staying in and watching it and going out nd experiencing it. So a lot of our education circled around this change in weather.

Science/Nature-

Weather- We read some books on weather and the changes it brings. We clubbed some of Shirley hughes poems with this and read about the beauty of spring. Of course this meant having to go out and splashing in puddles and getting wet in the rain as we did several nature walks. We saw how many new beautiful plants grow in the rains and thanks to my husband, we ate some edible flowers on our walk. We observed closely how earthworms kept collecting in containers up on the terrace, new baby earthworms each time we visited up, and we loved how big our Okra leaves have grown! So many opportunities to speak about the clouds, rainwater and its many benefits and how it fills up our natural reserves. We also saw a few of these ponds newly formed due to the recent rains over the past 2 weeks.

Measurement- We have been exploring weights and lengths of different objects using measuring tools and ‘big and small’ has been occupying Ahnas thoughts these days.

Art-

Having Justin around for these has been instrumental in keeping Ahna interested and motivated to try to do better. He has also rediscovered his love for painting and even chose to paint a picture over a nap one afternoon! I love this contagious love for learning that home education offers.

I tried my hand at painting a picture too!

Read aloud time

We’ve enjoyed so many conversations and ideas through the beautiful stories we read these 2 weeks. The day we read Brave Irene, was also the day we went out in an almost stormy rainfall, just like Irene, and it was the day Ahna sat on her trampoline(instead of jumping) on her own initiative to keep herself safe from a broken part. She called out to me and once I fixed it, she resumed jumping. It was wonderful to speak about how both of these can be considered to be acts of bravery. We’ve also been talking about guarding our body, ears, eyes and hearts.

Fine motor skills- Tracing, pre writing, cutting

We try to incorporate these into our lessons or daily life. Ahna also has started tracing and colouring without supervision so she gets plenty of practice with this skill through the day for me not to include it in our school time. These past 2 weeks, we did do some cutting and pasting craft activity on demand though.

Chores-

Ahna has been working on her chores as and when required but I have not been able to separate a time for chores yet. We’ll revisit a set time when she’s 3.5 years old probably. She is currently between dropping her nap and taking short naps. We have also tried quiet time. Currently, we go along with the flow of the day and her need on a daily basis. It’s frequently changing in this season of life. We organised her cupboard together. She uses the bottom shelves on her own and is able to clothe herself 90% of the time. She still needs help with the tee shirts sometimes, especially when they fit just right. So if you see my child in loose fitting clothes, you know why!

Here’s a clip of Ahna painting.
